The Luit Project was born on 21st May 2004. The project's goal is to localize free and open-source software in the assamese language. Initial targets are to integrate Assamese support into KDE and GNOME desktop environments, but our ultimate aim is to provide a complete Assamese desktop in the Linux platform.
This project is in its infancy and we greatly need the support of the assamese community to successfully execute our goals. If you wish to provide any kind of support (technical, translation, financial), please send an e-mail to The Luit Project and we will immediately get in touch with you.
Please register yourself as a new user to avail the the newsletter and other announcements on www.luit.org. Read the FAQs (Frequently Asked questions) before posting messages on the forum.

Assamese XKB keymap and beta font released

An assamese keymap has been hacked from the bengali keymap to display all assamese characters properly. An assamese font is also on the way to its release and it will support all characters and conjuncts. Get the keymap from here. Intructions on how to enable the keymap can be found in this README.
The beta version of Assamese truetype font "Luit" can be downloaded from here: LuitNormal.ttf

[ Note: LuitNormal.ttf is in beta development and it can't display some assamese conjuncts correctly. These bugs will be removed in the final version.]

Immediate requirement of developers for the GNOME translation team

The current status of the GNOME localization is at: http://l10n-status.gnome.org/gnome-2.10/as/index.html All the pot files required for translation can be obtained from this location. Download the atk po file translated by Sunaram Patir from here.
Bhaskar Dutta and Sunaram Patir are the current maintainers of the GNOME team. If you would like to join in, please start contributing to the project immediately!

Mandrake Linux 10.1 localization status is available at: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/l10n/as.php3
